DESCRIPTION:PA Forestry Association | About our local Walk In Penn’s Woods  \nVisit the historic Durham Furnace and Mill in the agricultural valley carved by the cold waters of Cooks Creek in Upper Bucks County. Meet with other hikers and your hosts at the Durham Mill\, then walk 3 plus miles through old oak forest to the iron mines that fed the furnace and began the iron and steel story that led to the legacy of Bethlehem Steel. Learn about charcoal production and reading forest history as well as threats to today’s forests. See the impacts of invasive species and learn about the value of diverse habitat. The hike is strenuous\, ground is steep and trails uneven. Hikers should come prepared: sturdy shoes/boots\, long pants are advised.  \nMeet at Durham Mill/Township Hall\, 215 Old Furnace Rd. Durham PA; Township Hall lot or street parking nearby. We will gather at the Mill entrance and walk up to the site trailhead. \nThis walk is not recommended for wheelchairs or strollers due to the terrain. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 16\, 2023\, 10 AM to 2 PM\, offers healthy outdoor activities for young and old\, children and parents alike. Activities begin at Fry’s Run County Park\, corner of 611 South and Royal Manor Rd. in Williams Township\, PA.\n \nAt the park homebase\, they’ll find a plethora of native plants for sale — monarda\, mountain mint\, phlox\, ginger\, blue lobelia\, native coral honeysuckle among others – as well as shrubs and trees like sweet birch\, elderberry\, red twig dogwood\, and redbud.\n \nVisitors will learn firsthand at Fry’s Run how to preserve a stream by examining everything they can catch in a net (from crayfish to stoneflies). Kids can express their impressions about the pollinator plants and macroinvertebrates they’ll see in the stream\, guided by artists Mary and Don.\n \nHoney bee culture will be demonstrated by Matt\, who reminds us that foraging bees must collect nectar from approximately 2 million flowers to make a single pound of honey. Joining the activities is a member of Trout Unlimited\, who will show how to do fly- tying. And Didi and Eileen will entertain the children during 11 AM story hour.\n \nAt 11 AM at a nearby property visitors will see how and where a stream begins its flow to the Delaware River\, guided by biologist Lorraine — what challenges a stream meets\, what impediments it overcomes.\n \nAdmission free\, the program welcomes everyone. The address is 215 Saylors Ln.\, Easton\, PA\n18042. The walk will specifically focus on forest history\, young forest\nregeneration\, invasive species management\, biodiversity\, avian\nmonitoring efforts and forest road access/maintenance. USDA may also\nbe present to discuss pollinator meadows. \nIt’s advisable to dress appropriately; no flip flops or sneakers. Hiking on\nuneven surface is expected\, along with water crossings.
